(Newser) – At least 272 inmates are dead after a devastating blaze swept a federal prison in central Honduras overnight, officials say. A fire department spokesman in Comayagua described a "hellish" scene in which many prisoners "burned to death or suffocated in their cells." Many were apparently left to die when the guard carrying the key to their cells went missing, reports the AP. Firefighters said that gunfire prevented them from entering the burning building, notes Reuters. The toll could worsen, as the prison held 800 inmates. "This is a preliminary report; there could be a lot more deaths," a forensic expert says.

I recall back in ’90 when I was stationed with the American Joint Task Force located at an airbase down the road from the prison,  that it looked like something out of a Beau Gest movie. The prison was out in the middle of a field and was built like an old French Foreign Legion fortress from back in the 30’s.  Half of it seemed as it had burnt down already and it was obviously overcrowded then.  By the sounds of things, it doesn’t seem as if things had gotten any better since.

Wow - great way to execute a big group of low lifes. The world is a safer place today.

Sounds like a botched escape attempt.
