(Newser) – Just because a job sounds interesting, complicated, or intriguing does not mean it pays a fortune. Forbes uses Bureau of Labor stats to round up what it views as the 10 "most surprisingly low-paying jobs," including:

  • Marriage and family therapists: Average salary, $47,530
  • Models: Average salary, $42,560
  • Corpse embalmer: Average salary, $44,280
  • Private investigator: Average salary: $47,830
  • Firefighter: Average salary, $47,730
Check out the rest of the list here.

Firefighters' base salary is on average under $50,000.

The problem with the firefighter payscale is supply and demand. Once you're in though you become a part of one of the best professions in the world.

Those numbers are an absolute crock. They mean nothing without geographical and population density analysis along with standard deviations and means.  Bottom line imo, the firefighter salary is way low and the therapist salary is way high.  But a firefighter in a 200 population town in the Ozarks is going to make wayyyyy less than a firefighter in NYC or Chicago. Basically a complete pile of bull shit.

Actually, virtually none of those were a surprise.  If you are at the top of some of those professions (models, TV announcers, etc.) you can make a fortune.  But the vast numbers of them just eke out a living.
