Not exactly geographic rivals, Calgary and Carolina played a tight game more suited to familiar enemies tonight, and it was won by Calgary, 4-3, on Dion Phaneuf's goal with eight minutes remaining. During their fourth straight win on a six-game road trip the Flames also got goals from captain Jarome Iginla, Dustin Boyd, and Kristian Huselius. That's 13 goals in two games for Calgary. In other action:

  • Buffalo got a backhander from Tim Connolly late in the third to pull out a 5-3 win over the hapless Washington Capitals.
  • The Leafs found a way to stop the league's leading goal scorer, Ilya Kovalchuk, from finding the net along with the rest of his team in a 4-0 win in Atlanta. Alexei Ponikarovsky scored twice for Toronto.
