Flames Douse Host Hurricanes in Tight One

(Newser) – Not exactly geographic rivals, Calgary and Carolina played a tight game more suited to familiar enemies tonight, and it was won by Calgary, 4-3, on Dion Phaneuf's goal with eight minutes remaining. During their fourth straight win on a six-game road trip the Flames also got goals from captain Jarome Iginla, Dustin Boyd, and Kristian Huselius. That's 13 goals in two games for Calgary. In other action:

  • Buffalo got a backhander from Tim Connolly late in the third to pull out a 5-3 win over the hapless Washington Capitals.
  • The Leafs found a way to stop the league's leading goal scorer, Ilya Kovalchuk, from finding the net along with the rest of his team in a 4-0 win in Atlanta. Alexei Ponikarovsky scored twice for Toronto.

  • Huet Pays Dividends Again for Capitals

    Trading for Cristobal Huet paid off again for the Washington Capitals tonight, reports the Associated Press. Huet recorded his second shutout for the Caps and 17th of his career by blanking the Florida Panthers, 4-0, making 32 saves. It was Huet's fourth shutout of the season.   • Devils Dominate Shootout to Down Flyers

    The Devils stopped the bleeding last night, ending a five-game winless skid with a 5-4 shootout victory over Philadelphia. Despite the Flyers' Mike Knubel leveling the game with less than a minute to play in regulation, they had no answer for New Jersey's three shootout goals, ending Philly's four game winning streak, the AP reports.   • Caps Grab OT Win, Remain in Playoff Chase

    The Capitals got the two points they needed tonight, but the Lightning didn’t give them up without a fight. Alexander Semin got Washington through regulation and Tomas Fleischmann won it for them in overtime, reports the AP.
