Obama Files Trade Complaint Against China

Says it's trying to 'skirt the rules' when it comes to rare-earth minerals

(Newser) – The US, Japan, and the European Union filed a joint complaint against China with the World Trade Organization today over Beijing's limits on rare-earth mineral exports, which they say violate China's international agreements. In a speech in the Rose Garden, President Obama accused China of "skirting the rules," and hurting US businesses and workers, the AP reports. "If China would simply let the market work on its own, we'd have no objection," he said. "Their policies currently are preventing that from happening."

Rare-earth minerals are vital for producing electronics, and China now produces 95% of them, the Washington Post reports. But China only has about 30% of the world's supply; other countries, including the US, simply stopped mining the minerals because China sold them for cheaper. But in 2009 Beijing placed a quota on exports, in what it said was a move to prevent over-mining, but which analysts interpreted as an attempt to flex its economic muscles.

USA: Kings of hypocrisy! Obama says "If China would simply let the market work on its own, we'd have no objection. This from a nation that pays it's farmers $20bn in subsidies a year, that bails out banks and auto companies, that trumpets capitalism for all profits, yet practices socialism for losses by favored companies. Don't you sometimes - just occasionally - get embarrassed??

China keeps making the Democrats look like asses.  Then the Democrats like Mao worshiping Obama grovel to them.  It's pathetic.

Okay, before everyone flips the hell out, remember that in a free market system, other entities arise to fill in demand. China is not the only supplier of rare earth metals, and in the time it takes for this complaint to wind its way through the eldritch machinations of the WTO, the producers in Russia, Africa, and the Americas will have been gearing up to fill in demand, thus rendering the complaint effectively moot.  Besides this, there are a number of electronics firms, chief among them Foxconn, who operate in China. If major sources like Apple, Fujitsu, and Samsung leave due to China's pricing policies, there will be an obvious change. Finally, isn't this kind of a pathetic attempt by China to steer attention away from its support of Syria and its limp-wristed impulses to end the conflict?
