Court Seems Fine With Arizona Immigration Law

Or at least, with parts of it

(Newser) – Today the Supreme Court heard the final arguments in the case over Arizona's controversial immigration law, and it's not looking good for the Obama administration. Justices seemed decidedly skeptical about the Justice Department's central argument that the law impinged on the federal government's power to control immigration, the Washington Post reports. "What could possibly be wrong," John Roberts asked, with having police check detainees' immigration status, and pass the information to the federal government?

Antonin Scalia questioned the solicitor general about whether a state could "defend its borders." Even Sonia Sotomayor said that the government's argument was "not selling." But the justices seemed critical about individual parts of Arizona's law—particularly the criminal penalties it imposed on immigrants who seek work, penalties greater than federal law allows. Roberts also made clear from the start that the court wasn't considering whether or not the law would lead to racial profiling.

Have you read the Arizona Immigration Law??? Well, apparently no one in the Obama Administration nor anyone in our Congress or the media has read it because there is such an incredible amount of misinformation being spewed out. Examples of what the law does and does not allow:   1) You are an 8 year old girl in an ice cream store buying a double-dip cone.  A nearby law enforcement officer suspects you might be an illegal alien.  What can he/she do?  The officer can comment to the girl that she has made a good flavor choice and to enjoy her cone. You are a slightly older girl who has just robbed the ice cream store, pistol whipped the clerk, and stolen the little girl’s double-dip ice cream cone. What can the law enforcement officer do in this case?  The officer can arrest the older girl, and ask for identification.  Many types of I.D. are listed and considered satisfactory under the law.  If she cannot produce a legal form of I.D., the officer may pursue her immigration status. 2)  Two “foreign looking” men wearing T-shirts bearing the flag of a foreign country are legally sitting on a park bench, eating ethnic food, and chatting to each other in a foreign language.  What can a law enforcement officer do in this case?  He can wish them a nice day and walk on. Two “foreign looking” men are beating a 90-year old lady on a park bench, and stealing her ethnic food.  In this case, an officer can arrest the two men because they are in the commission of a crime, and require them to provide satisfactory I.D. 3)  A woman is driving on Interstate 10 through Phoenix, obeying all traffic laws.  She is dark complected, and her car is covered with “I hate America” stickers.  An Arizona Highway Patrol officer is allowed to be upset with her views toward our country.  That’s it. The same woman is driving on Interstate 10 through Phoenix at about 90 MPH.  A state highway patrolman stops her and demands to see her driver’s license.  She produces a valid AZ license.  The patrolman writes her a speeding ticket.  Since she produced a valid ID under the AZ law, the officer cannot pursue her immigration status. OMG, how can we live is such a hate-filled country?  Everyone in the above examples was an illegal immigrant.  Yet, they were treated like, well, citizens.

The misinformation surrounding this bill is incredible.  99% of the people criticizing this bill have either never read it or have an agenda.  I have read the bill word for word.  There is nothing wrong with it if applied as it is written.  Read the bill and then comment or STFU.
