Kenyan Takes Boston, Again

Cheruiyot win gives Kenya 15 of the last 17 marathons

(Newser) – Robert K. Cheruiyot won the Boston Marathon on a cold and windy day, albeit with a slower time than the record he set last year. Cheruiyot also won last year's Chicago Marathon, at which he memorably fell down and concussed himself while crossing the finish line. This makes 15 Kenyan-won Boston Marathons in the last 17.

Coming in 8th, Peter Gilmore was 2007's highest-ranked American. Globe columnist Bob Ryan is incredulous at the run of Kenyan victories in Boston, calling the phenomenon "a tyranny that certainly should be an embarrassment to the rest of the running world." He adds that he race "might as well be renamed the Kenyan Invitational."

Firefighter Dies in Chicago Marathon

35-year-old collapsed just 500 yards from the finish line

(NEWSER) - A firefighter running in the Chicago Marathon to raise money for charity collapsed and died yesterday, reports AP . William Caviness, a 35-year-old firefighter from North Carolina with two young children, entered the race to raise money for burn victims. He collapsed about 500 yards from the finish line, and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital around noon. The race's medical director says about one in every 100,000 to 120,000 marathon runners die, reports the Sun-Times ; he notes that studies show such deaths typically occur near the finish line or at the end of the race. Sammy Wanjiru jumps after wife finds him with another woman

(NEWSER) - Kenyan Olympic marathon gold medalist Sammy Wanjiru leaped to his death from the balcony of his apartment following a heated argument with his wife, authorities said. Wanjiru, 24, had been drinking when his wife found him with another woman in their home in Nyahururu, said police. Efforts to revive him on the scene failed, authorities said. Police are continuing to question both women about events leading up to the tragedy, reports the BBC . More»

New Record Set in Boston Marathon

Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai takes first place

(NEWSER) - Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya took first place at the Boston Marathon today, finishing the race in a record 2:03:02. That time beats the marathon’s previous record, set by fellow Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot, by more than two minutes, reports the Boston Globe . It would also be a world record, except that Boston times aren’t recognized internationally because the course is riddled with hills.
