(Newser) Hustler publisher and professional muckraker Larry Flynt is “arguably the greatest student of the American underbelly since J. Edgar Hoover"—and now he’s got big conservatives in his sights, writes Vanity Fair. Flynt, who has often offered money for the unmasking of gay or adulterous politicians, insists he’s about to expose the misdeeds of a closeted Republican senator—and that a GOP presidential candidate’s scandal may follow.

Flynt estimates he has spent $5 million in his crusade; his operatives took down one-time Speaker of the House Bob Livingston by exposing a string of extramarital affairs—Bill Clinton subsequently deemed Flynt “my hero," the porn king claims. Flynt maintains he’s upholding honesty in government, but Vanity Fair  is reminded of Joe McCarthy and P. T. Barnum. But the mag doesn’t dispute that “the other shoe’s going to drop any day” for Flynt's targets.
