Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told mourners yesterday that he was blameless in the death of wife Mary Richardson Kennedy, who hanged herself last week after a long battle with depression. “I know I did everything I could to help her,” Kennedy said in his eulogy at a church in Bedford, NY. "The day before she died, she called me and said, 'You know me better than anyone in the world,'" he said. "She said, 'I was such a good girl.' I said, 'I know you are and you still are.'"
But Kennedy admitted that she blamed him "for taking her away from her profession" to raise their family, the New York Post reports. The packed church included members of the Kennedy clan and celebrities such as Chevy Chase and Susan Sarandon. Mary's own family, however, boycotted the funeral after a feud with RFK Jr. over who would claim the body. At the evening burial, he choked back tears as he described Mary's depression: "She was battling those demons and keeping them out of the paradise that was Mary.”
