Mountain Lion Shot Dead in Downtown Santa Monica

(Newser) – Things didn't end well for a young mountain lion who made his way through miles of urban landscape to downtown Santa Monica yesterday. After the janitor of an office complex stumbled across the cat, police officers made several attempts to subdue it using tranquilizing darts, nonlethal bullets and a fire hose before shooting it dead, angering animal lovers in the California city, reports the Los Angeles Times.

"Everybody is so devastated about this," said one resident shocked to hear that the lion was shot dead near where she attends art class. "I'm just so sad. This could happen again. Are they going to shoot animals every time this happens?" Cops defended the shooting, saying there was a preschool across the street and shoppers nearby. State officials say it's highly unusual for a mountain lion to wander into an urban area. A National Park Service biologist suspects that the young cat had moved away from the Santa Monica range in a doomed attempt to establish its own territory.

People were actually laying flowers down at the site where the mountain lion was killed. Flowers! I'm sure if the "Poor Baby" were able, he'd have asked that the citizens of Santa Monica to donate to the World Wildlife Fund in lieu of flowers. I love animals, but If it comes down to me and my family or a dangerous mountain lion out of his territory and in MY neighborhood, the mountain lion's gonna get dead every time.

Poor baby.   It sounds like they did more to agitate it rather than subdue it which would have made it a  harder target to hit w/a tranquilzer gun but a lot easier to hit w/multiple officers aiming thier pistols.  Next time don't spray w/water hose. Anyone who knows anything about cats knows they hate to be sprayed w/water. Wasn't there a big net somewhere? If they had time to get someone there w/a tranq gun, they should have had time to get that same person there w/a net too. But no let's have some fun touturing the big cat then we'll use him for target practice. I'm sorry L.A. police, I wasn't there and maybe this isn't how it was but I lived out there too long 40 years ago.

Mountain lions wander down into Salt Lake Valley occasionally and I have never heard of them having to be killed. They are tranquilized and relocated.
