Schnellenberger Still A Winner

Florida Atlantic defeats Memphis in New Orleans Bowl

(Newser) – Not bad for a team that has been only been competing for a Division I bowl berth since 2005: Florida Atlantic got its first bowl win, 44-27, over Memphis, to keep coach Howard Schnellenberger perfect in his bowl game appearances. Of course, his most famous bowl game was the 1983 Orange Bowl championship over Nebraska to win the national title.

The 73-year-old coach got the Gatorade shower after his team had sealed the win. Memphis quarterback Martin Hankins had gotten the Tigers to within three points in the second half with his 283 yards and three touchdowns passing. He left the game, however, with a right leg injury, and the Tigers couldn't keep pace in his absence. Dilvory Edgecomb had a TD for Florida Atlantic.
