Mayor Turns His Parking Spot Into Park

Ithaca's Svante Myrick, 25, wasn't using it

(Newser) – The mayor of Ithaca, NY, gave up his car and started walking to work—but he still had his own reserved parking spot downtown. What to do? Svante Myrick, 25, the city's youngest mayor, decided to turn his "parking space into a park space," he wrote on Facebook. Apparently everyone is welcome—the "Reserved for Mayor" sign above the spot now has an added, "And Friends"—and the spot features benches and tree trunks for sitting and, of course, flowers. Hat tip to Grist for the find.

Perfect example of feel-goodism that lacks any kind of logic. So you put a couple park benches and tree stumps on your concrete parking space that that's supposed to do ... what? Save the environment? Be an example of good government? What's the difference between having the park bench on the sidewalk next to the building and having it in the parking space? It would have been better if he just gave up his parking space to make it an open parking space for visitors to park in. That would have actually accomplished more and would have been logical. But it just doesn't look as hippie or hipster.

Perhaps it is just growing up in the mid-west, but in my book, a park is supposed to have something besides concrete underfoot.  Like grass. Nice idea, though.
