Boy Scouts Must Release 'Perversion Files': Court

Documents reveal molestation suspects across 2 decades

(Newser) – The Boy Scouts of America has two decades' worth of documents on 1,200 suspected child molesters in the organization—and the long-secret files are set to go public. A court has ruled that the "perversion files," cited by attorneys in a 2010 lawsuit, are public record. That means 20,000 pages of material on child abuse and lesser offenses, from 1965 to 1985, will come to light, the AP reports.

A lawyer in the 2010 case, which held that the BSA hadn't adequately protected a boy who'd been molested, calls the files "poignant and disturbing." "These files were integral to the jury finding that the BSA failed to use its vast knowledge of sexual predators to protect its Scouts," he said. For its part, the BSA says it fears the files' release could hurt those who were suspected of child abuse without being convicted. What's more, the documents could "negatively impact victims' privacy and have a chilling effect on the reporting of abuse."

I was in the scouts for about 3yrs, I loved it. There were always several fathers around. We had a swimming outing twice a month in the winter and camping in the summer. The organization I was in was pretty large. I never saw anything improper, never heard of anything either. They went to great lengths to make sure everyone was safe, I always felt safe and made a lot of friends. It was a good experience for me & my friends. The uniforms were dorky though.

BigDave and Loginsuck, thank you. That is the exact thing I was thinking of. I have been involved in Scouting for over 20 years and from what I have seen they take every case seriously. I know of one boy who was abused by another boy at camp and when it was reported at 10pm at night the two boys were removed instantly and the police were interviewing everyone in the campsite that night. For those of you comparing the church to the Boy Scouts, you are so far off base. the church did everything in their power to hid the abuse and keep the priest in the church with just moving them. Boy Scouts do background checks on every leader and you can no longer even camp with them without having been properly trained and vetted. They don't even allow leaders to be in a room by themselves with the boys, must have two adults at ALL times. You are not allowed to enter tents of the boys for any reason nor can you even open the tent to wake them up. You wake them up by speaking to them and let them come out first. Any group that has adults and children together will have cases of abuse but it is how you react to those charges that matter. What from I have seen, it is never hiden or ignored. If you feel it has been please report your leaders to the district, council or national groups and you will see action.
