Travis Keith Glaspie, 22, faces charges including felony assault on a law enforcement animal.   (Wilmington Police)

(Newser) – A Delaware suspect who tried to bite his way out of a struggle with a police dog was charged with felony assault on a police animal—after he was treated for dog bites. Keith Glaspie, 22, who was wanted in connection with a shooting, was stopped by a two-year-old police dog named Maxx as he fled officers, and bit Maxx's ear in the struggle, said cops, causing a wound that required more than 15 stitches, ABC reports.

In turn, Maxx bit Glaspie in the thigh, but doctors said his wounds were minor when compared to the dog's. "It was something we haven’t seen,” Corporal David Pellegrino said of the attack on his K-9 partner. "Yes, our dogs do get assaulted, but no one has ever tried to cannibalize one of our animals before." Maxx is currently recovering from his injury, and "we are going to have to put him back into some scenario training once we get back to work just to make sure we are not going to have any future problems," said Pellegrino.

As much as I don't want to admit that this occurred in my state--the man bites dog story is out of Wilmington, North Carolina; not Wilmington, Delaware. The article and picture were pulled from the Wilmington Star News, the daily newspaper in Wilmington, North Carolina.
