Calif. City's Budget Fix: Soda Tax

Would raise $7M per year, officials say

(Newser) – El Monte, Calif., is staring down a fiscal emergency, but it's about to pop the top on a solution that could raise $7 million per year: Tax sugary drinks. The California city will ask voters to decide on the plan, which calls for sugar-sweetened beverages sold within the city to be taxed at a rate of one cent per ounce. If it passes, the new tax will fill the funding gap that will occur when a half-cent sales tax expires in 2014, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The city's finance director says El Monte is not on the verge of bankruptcy, but it doesn't want to follow other California cities like Stockton and San Bernardino down that path. "People are looking for who's the next one [to declare bankruptcy]," he says. "El Monte is not the next one … not today, not now. What we're doing is financial planning. We're trying to take the right steps." Based on the fact that 48% of Americans have at least one soda every single day, it's probably a solid plan.

Is the sky falling?  All this crap about a "Nanny State" is utter BS.  This is just a proposal to put it up for a vote by the citizens of El Monte.  If it passes...it would be because "we the people" [of El Monte] decided to pass it in a democratic way.  Not because it was forced by "The Nanny State". It would be something totally different if the city council just said, "We're going to tax 'sugary drinks' whether you all like it or not."

Tax all processed foods, they are killing us!  Food stamps should be limited to raw or whole foods only, you want some potato chips, make em your self!  Pasta... here is a recipe... make it yourself.  oh and legalize weed duh!

Why don't they just tax all groceries?  Why pick and choose.   Why are we subsidizing the farmers (high fructose corn syrup) and then turning around and taxing the products.  Why aren't they taxing butter and potatoes?  Sour cream.  Chips.  Everything but what's on the Mediterranean diet plan?  Government needs to get out of the "we know what's good for you" business of choosing winners and losers according to their current agenda, fix the damn roads, fire a few overpaid, lazy gov't union employees (it takes 5 of them here to paint yellow lines down the road), catch a few speeders, burglars and drug dealers and get out of everyone's life minutia.
