Working late into a pregnancy may not be good for the baby, a new study finds.   (Shutterstock)

(Newser) – Planning to work right up until your due date? You might as well light up a cigarette, a new study suggests. The study finds that babies born to women who worked into the ninth month of pregnancy were an average of half a pound lighter than those born to moms who stopped working after anywhere from six to eight months. The same effect is seen in babies of moms who smoke, the Daily Mail reports.

Previous studies have shown that low birth weight is associated with developmental problems later in life. (It should be noted that the low birth weight was only seen when mothers over the age of 24 worked into the ninth month—babies born to younger mothers fared better.) A study author says flexible maternity leave should be considered: "As this study suggests," he says, "the possible benefits of taking leave flexibly before the birth could be quite high." (It turns out dad's job can cause problems, too...)

It would be nice if women could get paid leave for the last 2 months of their pregnancy, without others: 1. using it as proof that she is the "weaker sex". 2. acting like women are lazy fat pigs who want to be waited on hand and foot. 3. penalizing women for childbearing by not taking them seriously as a professional. 4. whining about how women take advantage of the system, and get more perks than men. But since we have too many people already, childbearing is not valued. In fact, it will be resented more and more as resources become scarce.

unless you're a fat black woman working on her 6th kid, you should probably just abort that child. cuz we owe non-working black mothers milk for their children. no sympathy for white women with children. food stamps for the lazy and worthless.

So many important things to study and yet this is what we get. Another study trying to tell women to stay home and not work.
