Nissan's New Hires: Temps for 5 Years

New workers will make $12 an hour

(Newser) – Nissan is hiring about 1,000 new employees at its Mississippi plant, but there are more than a couple caveats that come with the new job opportunities. The most recent hires will be making about $12 an hour, and will remain as temporary employees for five years, reports the Detroit Free Press. It's not unusual for players in the struggling auto industry to utilize temporary workers, but analysts say that such a long period for temp work is out of the ordinary. For instance, Chrysler added temporary workers to its Illinois plant in 2009, but made them permanent in 2010.

Kristin Dziczek of the Center for Automotive Research say such moves are the "response of a shell-shocked industry trying to avoid anything remotely fixed until they know demand is there for a long time." Nissan's employees will be eligible for incremental raises, but those will cap off after five years. A top Nissan North America exec says that most skilled Nissan employees need that much time to get up to speed.

If Obama wins another term, we would have almost 5 more years of him.  Coincidence?  Sounds like Nissan is hedging that possibility.

You can bet that the people that take these jobs are on the lookout for any job that will pay close to $12 an hour and give them benefits. IBM pulled the same kind of shit in their Burlington plant a few years ago, and now they are in a permanent training mode. And you can take it from me. Training four people, one right after the other for the same job in the course of just one year and then having them leave for a job with benefits is a real moral killer. People will take these jobs until a better one comes along and then they're gone, usually without any notice and usually with an upright middle finger and a 'Fuck you' for the manager. IBM used to have a reputation as a great place to work. Now people avoid working for IBM in droves. If Nissan insists on holding to their temp for five years and no benefits position, they're gonna be doing a hell of a lot of training, permanently.
