Cougar-Killing Wildlife Official Loses Post

California fish and game commissioner voted out of presidency

(Newser) – A California Fish and Game commissioner who shot and killed a cougar will soon be hunting for a new post. Daniel W. Richards was voted out of his position as president today, seven months after he slew a mountain lion on a hunting trip and ignited a serious backlash. Richards snuffed out the animal in Idaho, where it is legal, but hunting mountain lions has long been illegal in California, reports the Los Angeles Times.

It didn't help Richards' popularity when soon after the January outing, photos surfaced on the Internet of him grinning and holding up the dead cougar. In March, dozens of state legislators asked for his resignation, and the state ethics agency accused of him violating the gift limit by going on the $6,800 jaunt. Richards refused to resign, and he says he will remain on the commission until his term ends in January.

1- Mountain Lions are NOT endangered! 2 -They ARE good eating! YES I have and DO eat any I take - is just like pork! 3 - I AM a 'Trophy' hunter! Is that bad? NO! Just because I want to take the OLDEST and Largest animal I am hunting is NOT a bad thing! ANY hunter that say's he doesn't is lying to him/her self! 4 - NO - they(Mt. Lions) do NOT JUST take the old, sick or weak. They take ANYTHING they can catch! Which a Lot of times is the SAME thing I am hunting - the Large LONE buck by himself(only ONE set of eyes to watch for him). 5 - Does HE kill just for FUN? YES!! Sometimes - documented cases of Mt. lion's getting into a flock of sheep and killing dozens but ONLY eating ONE! Kind of like your house cat - does he ALWAYS eat ALL of the mice he catches, or the Whole mouse? Does your cat hunt mice because You starve him? NO!  6 - Well written donw!

i'm amazed at some of the comments...very narrow minded and even 'bigoted' not to mention disgusting.   this man did nothing illegal! in fact he went throught the steps to LEGALLY pursue a mountain lion/cougar/puma (for those of you who are not aware, they're all the same species...it's just where they're located as to what they're called) i know, and understand, there are those of you who are opposed to hunting...THAT IS YOUR RIGHT...it is my, RIGHT, and the commisioners, to partake as long as i do it LEGALLY. is that difficult to accept? if your choice is to NOT hunt, that's you're right, but do NOT try to interfere with another's RIGHT to as long as it's legal.   IMO...boxing, cage fighting, kick boxing and football all are brutal, barbaric and cruel...that's my RIGHT to believe it...it is your right to believe the opposite...if you want to partake in it...THAT'S YOUR RIGHTand i will not interefere, or try to interfere with.   california has a highly dysfunctional state legslature and they don't know or understand much about anything let alone managment of wildlife.   the california state legislature believes it's laws should extend to the rest of the nation...they need to GET A LIFE! they believe they contol california residents no matter where they are or travel to...think not? why is it that many states will not sell firearms to california residents? and why do i have to go through the state of california if i wish to purchase a firearm OUT OF STATE?   this commisioner is a life-long hunter who has a great respect for wild life...how many of you know, and understand, that the post he's in is VOLUNTARY?   here where  i live, in the high desert of southern california, we have the big cats, they are VERY formidible and far from being shy or defenseless...try getting up in the morning and finding paw prints the size of a softball surrounding your house...it's not uncommon here.   we are able to get 'predation' tags if necessary...if your livestock or you have problems with them...trouble is, it's usually too late, but due to the dysfunctional legislature, we cannot LEGALLY hunt them to keep a sensible balance.   eating Mt lion? yes...those that hunt them normally DO consume them.   insofar as hunting and it's 'morality'....you are entitled to your beliefs...but don't try to force them on others!   keep in mind...this man did NOTHING ILLEGAL and he's being PERSECUTED by the legislature...notice i said PERsecuted not PROsecuted...because he did NOTHING ILLEGAL..they simply don't agree with him... i agree with mr richards...a thumb to the eye of california state legislature on this issue. good for you mr richards! .

I don't really enjoy the idea of a man killing an animal just for shits and giggles, but certainly doesn't make this dude a terrible human being. Some of the comments here are the kind I would see on a story of a man beating a woman up. I know it's all opinions and as such is subjective  but I wonder about the perspective of human beings.
