(Newser) – Mitt Romney jokingly said the United States needs to do a better job managing debt or it could end up like Greece, or closer to home, California. The Republican presidential hopeful told an audience in Iowa yesterday that he worries the US is on a pathway to crippling debt and is scaring off foreign investors. "Entrepreneurs and business people around the world and here at home think that at some point America is going to become like Greece or like Spain or Italy, or like California—just kidding about that one, in some ways," he added, to laughter from his audience.

Romney aides say he's made the joke before and clearly was kidding. Not laughing: California, which is facing the prospect of tax increases and spending cuts to deal with its budget problems. A spokesman for California Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, dismissed Romney's quip as "a paper-thin Republican talking point" that doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Really? Now we're going to pit states against states? If California sucks, why does everyone move here? And, correct me if I'm wrong but, hasn't Romney been here at least 3 times in the last few months for fundraisers? I seem to remember a certain photo opp in front of the vacant Solyndra building. There's plenty of money in Cali and he knows it. I mean come on, couldn't we go through the list of all states and come up with plenty of crap to criticize? Why target California? Oh well I guess because it's perceived to be a blue state, when it fact it's actually more purple, about half and half. On my drive home from work today, over the San Mateo Bridge in the Bay Area, I was behind a giant pick-up truck with a NOPE sticker on the back window (the O being the Obama O) and a bumper sticker about guns, something about not taking my guns or some shit, I was passing him so I couldn't make it out. So you Cali haters, just know that there are plenty of you right wing assholes right here, in SAN FRANCISCO of all places, so it would not be wise to shun an entire state, no matter how liberal you THINK it is.

Actually California and many other blue states such as Illinois and New York are more like Germany and France and the deeply red dysfunctional south is more like Greece. You see, those blue states basically support the teat-sucking, non-functional under their own power, conservative south with influxes of blue state tax dollars distributed by the federal government. If we're going to extend the Eurozone crisis analogy to cover the US we might as well do it factually.
