Just One RNC Event Today: Start National Debt Clock

Clock will be unveiled at brief session

(Newser) – Hurricane Isaac has winnowed today's Republican National Convention events to just one: a short pro forma session in which RNC Chairman Reince Priebus will unveil a "national debt clock." The clock will start ticking at 2pm, bearing a figure somewhere north of $15.9 trillion, above the delegates at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, USA Today reports. "This clock reminds every delegate and every American why we are here in Tampa—because America can and must do better," Priebus says. "Every American's share of the national debt has increased by approximately $16,000 during the current administration."

The cancellation of today's convention events also means that Donald Trump can't engage in a planned stunt, the Washington Post reports. After heading to Sarasota to accept the Sarasota Republican Party’s Statesman of the Year award, Trump was supposed do a bunch of interviews in Tampa before appearing at the convention in a "surprise stunt"—an appearance requested by Mitt Romney himself, according to Trump's spokesperson. That will no longer happen, to the relief of many Republicans. ("It's a blessing," says an alternate delegate from Michigan.) But Trump will still accept the award in Sarasota, leading the Sarasota Republican Party to issue a statement declaring the businessman "bigger than Isaac."

Interesting side note from memory lane... September 10, 2001, the day before 9/11, it was announced that the Pentagon could not account for $2.3 trillion. Of course, the next day shifted our focus.

WHAT A FARCE!  The only thing conservative about republicans is their own self interest.  Ryan voted for every debt raising bill that Bush proposed and his bogus war with all the death and suffering that went with it and continues to this day.  Why would we raise the defense budget when it is now bigger than China, Russia and the next top 8 countrys combined?  Don't believe me?  Google it,  US $711 Billion  China 143 $Billion.  That's insane!!!!!  All that money didn't stop 9/11 did it.  It's profits for the Military/Industrial Complex plain and simple?  They will give themselves a tax cut and raise ours.  It's no secret who is going to lose health benefits, who is going to lose rights, where the budget cuts will be. They've already told us, The working class, women, the poor, the elderly, firemen, police, teachers, students any one who doesn't belong to their country club.  If these guys get in we will be in big trouble.
