Dear Politicians, You Forgot About Social Security

It's dumb to focus just on Medicare: Ramesh Ponnuru

(Newser) – Politicians from both sides keep harping about Medicare and how or how not to fix it, while Social Security has become an "afterthought," writes Ramesh Ponnuru at Bloomberg View. Big mistake, he argues. The program's long-range troubles may be smaller than Medicare's, but they're still massive problems "on any other scale," and probably worse than most realize. One stat he uses to illustrate the point: The financing gap over the next 75 years is about double what it was when lawmakers struck a deal in 1983 to "fix" Social Security.

"We need to fix both programs," writes Ponnuru. "If anything, it’s Social Security that ought to be saved first because it’s the more urgent near-term problem." What's more, those same remedies would help Medicare's prospects, too. We need to get the debate rolling. Raise the retirement age? Cut the growth of benefits for high-income retirees? Maybe raise the payroll tax? "One way or the other, we need to get Social Security’s finances in order, instead of acting as though there’s no problem to be solved." Read the full column here.

The comments I've been reading about who did what and when is foolishness...but the facts will be clear as day when history is able to be told of Clinton, Bush, Obama and others. But really this issue of Social Security will be addressed as soon as Romney and Ryan take office. One step at a time. Right now everything is out of wack...with 30 million people out of work and collecting taxes and not paying taxes. Projections often don't take into account various values and economic circumstances...sort of like overhead of a company including upper managements pay and benefits...which changes the whole scope of things. In any event, what is important here and now is who is the best person for the job of getting America back on track and headed in the correct direction. We have seen poor management and poor decisions during the last 3 years and 9 months. The question then becomes do we find foolish reasoning for re-electing Obama in hope that the next four (4) years he'll get better in his management skills or do we get a proven managers to take over and get it right? And trust me, after all the Bull and other mess we'll hear from those of special interest....the bottom line is all about Good Management! How it should be addressed and the opinions of reporters and other is just that...you said I said and niether can actually do anything about it or could if we knew what we were talking about in the first place.. How reporters and other take a very, very complicated issue and make it so very simple! Why arn';t all of these great thinkers doing something good with all of their opinions like running for office? OK time to eat...I'm out of here God Bless You and God Bless America!

If the Supreme Court OR the state of Florida had done their job, we might have social security in a "locked box" by now.

It WAS fixed and running well at the end of Clintons last term, we even had a surplus But the moment the Right Wing saw a surplus they began to devise methods to rape it dry of funds and three wars at once came along and the American Economy went into the toilet And the Left Wing President has rubber stamped everything to continue the policies of the Right Wing predecessor because Big Biz wants it that way Republicans and Democrats, United in full support of Wall Street bankers and nobody else
