(Newser) – The long-awaited panda cub born Sept. 16 at the National Zoo in Washington has died, reports the AP. Zookeepers found the cub dead this morning after hearing distressed sounds from mom Mei Xiang. A cause of death is yet unknown, though the cub appeared outwardly to be in good condition. Panda cubs, born the size of a stick of butter and every bit as helpless, face a perilous first few weeks of life with threats ranging from infections to accidentally being crushed by their mothers. Mei Xiang has thus far seen one sole cub, Tai Shan, reach adulthood.

Well boo hoo. Can't get them to mate. When they do the off spring die from so many unknow causes the zoo keepers never stop scratching their heads. The mothers roll over on the babies and crush them to death. Their eye sight is terrible. They surround their sleeping area with their own dung.  Are we putting too much into a creature that sounds kinda dumb and helpless just because their cute.  Maybe they should just go extinct like the doh doh bird. The doh doh bird got that name for a reason. Not because it said doh. Maybe they should change the name to doh doh Panda.
