(AP) – A third person has died following the collapse of a parking garage at Miami Dade College, police say. The latest victim was pulled from the rubble early today, some 13 hours after the five-story structure fell, creating a pancake-like collapse. A police rep says the man died at a Miami trauma center. The mission has now turned to a recovery effort and police are expecting to find another body in the rubble, the spokesman says. The parking garage was under construction at the campus in west Miami-Dade County. Witnesses say workers ran screaming from the garage as it fell around noon yesterday. Multiple people were taken to the hospital following the collapse, the spokesman says. No names have been released.

Building concrete parking structures is not exactly leading edge technology.  Somebody had to screw up for it to happen.

Not allowing Concrete to set/dry and a rush to finsish can cause this.  Also poor design and criminal practices such as 'shorting' and poor quality product, can contribute to this failure. Just gald it didn't happen later when occupied.   Anyone remember the Inspection fiasco of the DEA Office garage that was built atop  a building never designed to withstand that weight?  The subsequent investigation was whitewashed. The City of Miami in allowing buildings to be renovated 'to allow for Built in Evidence Safes' and rooftop parking, that the structure could not support?   Don't worry , the Lawyers will unearth all of this in their Lawsuits!   I witnessed upper floor plywood forms collapsing in Miami during Pours of Concrete that extended their limits.  The Building and Zoning Boards need to be investigated again.  ~Rick Magee, FL

It was under construction. I don't think any students died.
