'Could Be' Candidate Bloomberg Crunching Data
Mayor Michael Bloomberg speaks on camera at Times Square in New York, Monday, Dec. 31, 2007. Speculation is mounting that the billionare New York mayor might give up his $1.00 a year salary to make an independent run for the White House. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)   (Associated Press)

Michael Bloomberg continues to deny that he's going to make an independent bid for the White House, but the billionaire New York mayor has built a colossal database of voter information from all 50 states, reports AP. "They want a hard-headed sense of their chances," said a member of Bloomberg's inner circle.

The database deploys microtargeting to compile information on individuals, such as home ownership, children in college, type of car or computer, and past political support; it can be analyzed to both gauge potential support and identify potential volunteers. Bloomberg operatives claim they could mobilize a million volunteers within a month of launching a campaign. (More Michael Bloomberg stories.)
