(Newser) – No. 8 Tennessee became the first team to beat conference rival No. 16 Mississippi this season after Tyler Smith hit a layup with less than 5 seconds for an 85-83 win. Ole Miss (13-1) went on a 23-7 run to make the score 83-79 with 2:22 remaining but couldn’t hold on, reports the AP. Elsewhere in men’s hoops:

  • No. 1 North Carolina beat UNC-Asheville 93-81 to complete its first perfect nonconference regular season since 1998. Tyler Hansbrough led the Tar Heels (16-0) with 23 points.
  • Charlotte blew a 12-point lead against No. 18 Clemson but finished the game on a 13-3 run to pull off the 82-72 upset. The 49ers hadn’t defeated a ranked opponent in nearly three years.
