Rick DiPietro took advantage of his two days off in Western Canada: He rested up after being peppered with 42 shots in his last start and scouted his next opponent on TV, reports the Calgary Herald. That scouting paid off as the newly chosen All-Star goalie stood on his head again for the Islanders to defeat Calgary, 5-4, in a shootout.

Veteran Mike Sillinger scored twice and Ruslan Fedotenko added three points as the low-scoring Islanders had a rare offensive outburst in improving to 1-1-3 in their last five games. Owen Nolan had two goals for the Flames while goalie Miikka Kiprusoff heard mock cheers from the home crowd. New York moved into seventh in the Eastern Conference standings. (More hockey stories.)
