(Newser) – It should have been a routine bond hearing on a minor drug charge, but Florida's Penelope Soto has instead become a viral video star for all the wrong reasons, reports the Miami Herald. The 18-year-old wasn't taking the proceeding too seriously, smiling and laughing as the Miami-Dade judge asked her questions. When she called out "Adios!" as she left, he called her back and doubled her bond to $10,000. That finally got her attention. She walked away, flipped him the bird, and uttered an expletive. The judge then called her back and sentenced her to 30 days in jail.

The last laugh is on the judge since thirty days in the slammer will wipe that smirk off the girls face.

To those of you who are crying "free speech": Ms. Soto exercised her right to free speech admirably, and paid a dear price for it. Freedom of speech does not equal freedom from the consequences of how one chooses to exercise that freedom. This judge asked questions typical of an arraignment hearing--questions directed at setting an appropriate bond amount and whether the accused qualifies to be represented by the public defender. Both of these hinge on net worth. If you want a fair bond, don't disrespect the person responsible for setting it. It's common sense.
