Cell Phone Radiation Disrupts Sleep

(Newser) – Researchers have found that radiation from cell phones can cause sleep loss, headaches, and confusion, the Independent reports. Mobile phone manufacturers were quick to downplay the results of the new study—which they themselves funded—but sleep experts say the research backs up previous studies, and they're calling for a full investigation into the effects of cell phone radiation.

Subjects exposed to radiation identical to that emitted from cell phones took longer to enter the deepest stages of sleep and spent less time in them, according to the study published by MIT's Progress in Electromagnetics Research Symposium. The results could be especially worrying for children and teenagers, who are highly likely to use phones before bedtime, and may be most affected by lack of sleep.

Research sponsored by mobile phone manufacturers concluded that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals components of sleep believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear are adversely affected.
