(Newser) – As force-feeding of 44 detainees continues at Guantanamo, Islamic leaders are calling on the US to halt the process during Ramadan, which begins today. (The prison has said it will perform the force-feeding at night during the holy month.) To underscore the point, actor and rapper Yasiin Bey, also known as Mos Def, has been filmed being force-fed under standard Gitmo procedures—or attempting to be. In the 4-minute video, which was released to the Guardian, the star grimaces and moans as the procedure begins; after an attempt to insert the feeding tube fails, he begs "please, don't" and can't continue the process. He explains in the video, "It feels like something is going into my brain ... I really couldn't take it."

It's definitely not the most pleasant experience in the world, but it's really not that bad. I understand Mos Def is making a statement here, but seriously. I fully agree that those detainees who were cleared of any charges should have been released years ago, but the medical staff there are doing the humane thing here. As long as the detainees are there, it's the medical staff's duty to do what they can to keep them alive and healthy, even if that means forced feeding to keep them from starving to death.
