Amanda Bynes was hospitalized last night on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold, the section of California's Welfare and Institutions Code made famous in 2008 by Britney Spears. She was taken in by police after allegedly setting a fire in the driveway of a Thousand Oaks home. (Bynes grew up in Thousand Oaks, and owns a home nearby.) Officers determined based on Bynes' answers to their questions that she needed to be hospitalized. TMZ helpfully translates: Her answers must have been "really wacky."

Bynes apparently does not know the elderly owner of the home; the residence is near a retirement community where Bynes had been accused of trespassing the night prior. Here's a timeline, courtesy TMZ:

  • Sunday night: Bynes allegedly tried to get into the retirement home but was turned away because she appeared to be drunk. Management called her a cab, but she was kicked out of the taxi because she didn't have any money. She headed back toward the retirement home, and police were called. She apparently was not arrested, but may have been ticketed.
  • Earlier yesterday: Bynes was photographed, apparently pantsless and wearing a terrible wig, at a Santa Monica Bloomingdales.
  • Last night: The fire incident occurred. Bynes allegedly burned some of her clothing and was carrying a red gas tank.
Because of the 5150's 72-hour limit, Bynes could be walking the streets again by Thursday. (More Amanda Bynes stories.)
