$53M in Jewels Stolen From Cannes Hotel
Follows pair of thefts during film festival

(Newser) – Cannes, it seems, has become a popular target for jewel thieves. Its film festival suffered two jewel robberies this year; now a gunman has fled with a briefcase full of jewelry worth $53 million. Today's heist occurred at a jewelry show at the Carlton Hotel, on the famous Croisette promenade, the BBC reports. "An urgent operation is under way to catch the culprit and recover these jewels. Thieves see Cannes as rich pickings," a police rep says. Bizarre side note: The Carlton Hotel featured as a central location in Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch A Thief—yes, his film about a jewel thief.

boo-hoo...take 10 million dollars worth of jewelry,have it appraised at 53 million,insure it for 100 million...go to theft hotspot...loose jewelry,collect big bucks...buy back jewelry on black market for 5 million.....if the rich know anything it is how to stay rich !!
