(Newser) – A Chicago Tribune story about a 4-year-old girl wounded in a drive-by shooting Sunday night has this jarring statistic: She is one of eight kids ages 7 or younger who have been shot in the city during the last six weeks. In the Sunday shooting, Shyla Rivera got hit in the thigh while riding in the back seat of a car, while her older brother and his friend also were wounded. The car was deliberately targeted, but police say those inside were not gang members. "She's a tough son of a gun," says her brother. "She took it better than I did." The city is having yet another violent summer, after registering more than 500 homicides last year.

In the 1920's when alcohol was banned, who ended up distributing and selling alcohol and establishing a well financed foothold in the US? Criminals! Since the banning of illegal drugs in the 1980's who has made a virtual industry out of distributing and selling these drugs and establishing a well financed foothold in the US? Criminals! Who will make an industry out of distributing and selling guns and establishing a well financed foothold in the US if guns are banned? ?????

Funny, but for the first 30 years of my life these stray bullet episodes didn't happen. Why? We didn't have the proliferation of guns in the U.S. Fill one building full of gas cans. Leave the building next to it empty. Which one do you think might explode if a flame is introduced?
