Dennis Rodman Is a Joke

His North Korea trips are an 'outrage': Michael Moynihan

(Newser) – Dennis Rodman's old stunts, like wearing a wedding dress to a book signing, were mostly unimaginative ones designed to distract us from the fact that he's a washed-up former athlete without much to say, writes Michael Moynihan at the Daily Beast. The media fawned over him: Oh, that Dennis, he's such a card. He wanted to be outrageous, but he was mostly harmless. "But Rodman has now managed something approaching an actual outrage: his slobbering friendship with Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s cherubic little totalitarian who recently demonstrated his reformist bona fides by having his ex-girlfriend machine-gunned for crimes against the state," writes Moynihan.

The scary thing is that Rodman is being serious when he tells the world that the brutal Kim is a "good guy" and his regime "not bad." He even has defenders who say that his "basketball diplomacy"—really just a ploy for publicity and profit for him and the gambling company backing him—is meaningful. It's not. Rodman wants journalists to take him seriously? Fine, here goes, writes Moynihan: "I’ll take the bait this once and tell Comrade Rodman that no serious person can look at the vast prison camp that is the 'Democratic People’s Republic of Korea' and see a 'good' country, or embrace as a 'friend' a 'marshal' who has sentenced his subjects to a life of misery and penury."
