(Newser) – A Via Rail passenger train and a transit bus collided at a crossing in Ottawa today, and Canadian police say there are multiple deaths. Witnesses say the front end of the double-decker bus was ripped off by the impact. An Ottawa Fire spokesman told CP24 television there are "multiple fatalities" and a number on the bus are injured; he says there were no injuries on the train.

The accident occurred just outside a suburban train station in the city's west end in the middle of the morning commute. Pascal Lolgis, who witnessed the crash, says the bus appeared to drive through a lowered crossing barrier. "Boom! It went into the train like that," Lolgis says. "He just didn't stop."

When a professional driver rolls through a lowered crossing gate or past active warning lights into the path of a speeding train, the possibilities are that it was suicide/homicide, that the driver was momentarily paralyzed, or that the driver was unconscious. Various types of epilepsy could account for this collision, as could a heart attack, sleep apnea, severe sleep deprivation, or loss of consciousness from various other metabolic or neurologic causes. It's not unlikely we'll never know the cause of this tragedy.

There is just no helping stupid or careless people. Driving past railroad warning lights and into the path of a train is same dumb thing as putting a loaded gun to your head and pulling the trigger thinking nothing will happen. Solution to save Morons from themselves: Ban Trains, Planes, Automobiles, Trucks, bicycles, scooters, motorcycles, etc. (all are dangerous in the hands of idiots!) Better solution: Educate people. Railroads have an "Operation Lifesaver" program where their personnel go into schools and teach kids all about safety around railroad tracks. Apparently this bus driver didn't attend...

too many railway crossings in North America especially in metropolitan areas. Quite a few years ago, there was a similar one in suburban Chicago where a commuter train hit a school bus with a big loss of life. This one does sound like suicide.
