(Newser) – Gotham City is coming to primetime TV ... but without Batman. Fox has won a bidding war for Gotham, a new live-action series from The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, set in the fictional city before one of its billionaires started dressing up in bat costumes. Instead, the show will tell the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and various Batman-universe villains, Deadline reports. The show is such a hot property that it's been ordered straight to series without going through the pilot stage, adds IGN.

Batman sells. But a "Batman" based universe story minus Batman? Who knows. Interesting idea though.
