(Newser) – The five permanent members of the UN Security Council have finally agreed on the wording of a resolution that requires Syria to destroy its chemical weapons, reports the New York Times. As part of the deal worked out mainly between the US and Russia, Moscow and some former Soviet republics will send troops to guard Syria's stockpile of weapons and provide security for the international inspectors charged with overseeing its destruction, reports the Guardian.

As expected, the resolution won't threaten military action if Syria fails to comply or blame Bashar al-Assad for the chemical attack in August—two stipulations demanded by Russia. But it will be the "first legally binding resolution on Syria in the conflict" when the full 15-member council eventually adopts it, reports AP. A meeting was scheduled for later tonight.

Mmm, this scenario smells like rancid caviar. Russia puts in troops to protect the WMDs while Assad farts around. The Free Syrian Army gets upset and attacks. The Russians AND Assad's troops launch a counter- attack. Now, we got Russians and Assad fighting the Syrians and we got 'infidels' siding with minority Syrian Shites against the majority Syrian Sunni's. Plus, we got Shites across the border in Iraq. We got Sunni's in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Turkey. More Shites in Lebanon. Any bets on how long it will take before wackos in the Gaza Strip get their hands on some of Assad's weapons and attack Israel? I doubt this will end soon or end well... and the U.N. sits in New York City babbling. Meanwhile, in Washington, the Repubs shut down the government and demand the President send troops to Syria!! Yee-ha!

Poor GOPers can't stand that Obama put so much fear into Assad and Russia that they are bending over backwards to appease him. What really pisses of the GOPers is that this might mean no money for their defense contractor donors.
