Four suspended after 'indefensible' tape of arrest surfaces

(Newser) – Four Florida deputies have been suspended after one was taped dumping a quadriplegic man from his wheelchair and searching him on a jailhouse floor, Tampa Bay’s 10 News reports. The footage is silent, but Brian Sterner says deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones was irritated he refused to stand up. “It didn’t register that she was asking me to do something I can’t do.”

The Hillsborough County sheriff’s office is outraged. “This is indefensible,” the chief deputy said. “Anything short of dismissal would be inappropriate.” An attorney for Sterner—who was being booked on a traffic violation—wants criminal charges brought, for abuse of the disabled. "I’m very glad there was a camera present when they did this to me,” Sterner says.

(AP) - Coast Guard crews saw no signs today that the pilot of a small plane survived when it went down in the Gulf of Mexico about three hours after two F-15 fighter jets tried to make contact with him. The plane landed right-side up on the ocean surface and had been floating right after the crash, said the Coast Guard chief. (NEWSER) - Despite reporting that he was viciously attacked by Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman showed no apparent signs of abrasions, bleeding, or bruising when he was brought in for questioning by police the night he shot the teen. The handcuffed shooter appears untouched on a surveillance video—obtained by ABC News —as he's escorted into the Sanford police station. (NEWSER) - If you're going to steal the nameplate of a judge off his door, fine, have fun. But don't have a photo snapped of yourself holding the nameplate and then post it on Facebook, as Steven Mulhall, 21, of Coral Springs, Florida, is accused of doing, reports the Sun Sentinel . "The nameplate is like only $40, not that big of a crime, but what an idiot. He puts it on Facebook," says the local sheriff. "He's got multiple convictions for petty theft, so now this is a felony." US citizen from Yugoslavia suspected extremist

(NEWSER) - Federal agents have arrested a suspected Islamic extremist who allegedly planned to attack Tampa hotspots. Sami Osmakac, 25, a naturalized US citizen from the former Yugoslavia, allegedly plotted attacks using explosives and an assault rifle, the AP reports. Osmakac was reportedly caught buying weapons from an undercover agent; he's due in court today on a charge of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. More»
