Police are seeking the mother of a dead toddler and a severely injured 13-year-old girl today after a housekeeper discovered the two girls in an Oregon hotel room, News Channel 8 Portland reports. The mother, Jessica Smith, 40, checked in with her daughters at the hotel—the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach, Oregon—on Wednesday, officials say. Police say there were no signs of forced entry in the third-floor hotel room, and no one else was present, the Oregonian reports. The surviving girl had endured "critical cuts" and was taken to a Portland hospital.

Smith is only a person of interest so far, police say, and they just want to make sure she's safe; she may be driving a 2007 gold Chevy Suburban. KPTV has dug up court documents showing that her husband filed for divorce in June, and she filed a restraining order against him last month. Police say they have contacted the father in Washington about the case but revealed nothing about the conversation. (More dead child stories.)
