The idea that the world had seen its last Twilight movie was, apparently, too good to be true: The New York Times reports that the vampire franchise will live on via short films based on Stephenie Meyer's characters. Meyer and Lions Gate, which released the five films based on the book series, will choose five aspiring women directors to make the films, which you can watch next year exclusively on Facebook. "We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of Twilight to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans," says Lions Gate's vice chairman. "This is just the beginning—a template, if you will. You can probably guess what might be coming next."
But he wouldn't elaborate, leaving the Times to speculate: another full-length Twilight film? Or perhaps mini-movies based on another young-adult franchise, like Lions Gate's The Hunger Games or Divergent? None of the Twilight cast members are expected to appear in the shorts, but Twilight actress Kristen Stewart will sit on the all-female panel that will select and mentor the winning filmmakers (other big-name panelists: Meyer, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, and Julie Bowen). If you want to throw your hat into the ring, contest details will appear here.
