(Newser) – New Jersey took over the lead in the Eastern Conference with a 2-1 win against Washington thanks to John Madden's overtime goal, reports the AP. The Devils were led by Martin Brodeur's 37 saves and have won seven of their last eight games. NHL goals leader Alex Ovechkin, stuck on 48, did not light the lamp for the fifth straight contest.

  • Calgary grabbed first place in the Northwest Division with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota, which held that same spot by six points just a week ago. Miikka Kiprusoff had 38 saves for the Flames.
  • Jeremy Roenick scored the winning goal in the shootout as San Jose scored on all three attempts against Pittsburgh's Ty Conklin to win 2-1.
