(Newser) – Los Angeles police today arrested a gang member who they say shot five children and three adults at a city bus stop yesterday, the Los Angeles Times reports. Police say the suspect, a member of the Crips, had been trying to make a name for himself as an enforcer in recent months. He apparently was trying to shoot one target, who kept dodging between pedestrians.

One of the eight people shot, a 12-year-old girl, remains hospitalized with a chest wound. The shooting took place just blocks from a school, and many of the witnesses were students there. "It's difficult but we can't be with our children all the time," said one parent. "But every day there is violence around here."
