Cable giant spearheads effort to transform green cards into ballots

(Newser) – The nation's largest Spanish-language broadcaster is preparing to launch an unprecedented citizenship drive that could sway the 2008 presidential election. Univison's "Ya Es Hora" ("It's About Time") campaign, already under way in Southern California, will encourage the country's eight million green card holders to apply for citizenship—and the voting rights that accompany it.

In the LA area, citizenship applications more than doubled in the first quarter. "I have never seen anything like it in my career," says one official. Univision's president calls the campaign "a totally nonpartisan effort," but Democrats stand to reap the benefits, especially in battleground states like Arizona, New Mexico, and Florida, where new voters could swing the election.

John Atterberry, 40, had been a vice president of Death Row Records, then home to Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre, before going on to work with artists including Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera, and Michael Jackson, the Los Angeles Times reports. United Flight's Engine Shuts Down in Mid-Air

Plane makes emergency landing in Colorado

(NEWSER) - A United airlines flight en route from Denver to Los Angeles was forced to make an emergency landing in Colorado when one of its two engines shut down. The Boeing 757 experienced trouble shortly after takeoff and was diverted to a Grand Junction facility typically used by much smaller airplanes. There were no injuries among the 125 people on board, reports the Los Angeles Times . The FAA is investigating, although an official emphasized that planes are capable of traveling long distances on a single engine. "There was some applause when we landed," a passenger told AP . (NEWSER) - A 600-foot stretch of a Los Angeles coastal roadway has slid into the sea following heavy rains. A chasm 75 feet deep opened in Paseo del Mar as a huge mass of asphalt and earth slipped away in seconds from the top of a 100-foot bluff to the Pacific shore in the San Pedro region. No one was hurt, but the collapsing road took power cables, street lights and utility poles down with it as it tumbled to the ocean. "This entire coast along here is a cliff, so nature has created a new cliff," a city engineer told the Los Angeles Times . More»

(NEWSER) - The good news for California is that its state prison system has a lot fewer prisoners and parolees to deal with. The bad news, according to the mayor and police chief of Los Angeles, is that crime on the streets is going to rise. The state last weekend shifted responsibility for thousands of parolees and inmates onto local jurisdictions, in part to cut costs and in part to comply with a Supreme Court order to improve prison overcrowding, reports the Wall Street Journal .
