The combination of drunk Americans and pyrotechnics often proves tragic and fatal on the nation's birthday, and this year's Fourth of July was no exception: As the Press Herald reports, 22-year-old Devon Staples apparently set off a firework on top of his own head last night, instantly killing the Calais man and making him Maine's first fireworks' fatality since they were legalized in 2012.

Police says that Staples had been setting off fireworks with friends in a friend's backyard when he "placed the fireworks mortar tube on top of his head and set it off"; as the AP notes, "the friends had been drinking." (More fireworks stories.)
