The campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill remains shaken "to the core" by the shooting death of its popular student body president, the News & Observer reports. Thousands attended a vigil yesterday, and the governor issued a letter of condolence. Police called the shooting of Eve Carson, 22, in a nearby suburb a "fairly random crime."

"We've lost someone who we cherish and love. We're all in a state of shock," said the UNC chancellor. The shooting generated national attention because it followed a similar death of a female student at Auburn, but authorities say the two crimes are not linked, CNN reports. "She embodies the word beautiful in every shape of the definition, in spirit and mind and heart," said one student of Carson. (More shooting stories.)
