Cop Retiring After 35 Years Without Sick Day Ala. officer didn't miss many school days, either By Newser Editors and Wire Services Posted Oct 2, 2015 4:06 AM CDT 35 comments Comments Mike Flowers is seen in this photo from the Tuscaloosa PD's Facebook page. (Facebook) (Newser) – An Alabama police officer is retiring with an astounding work record: He's never taken a sick day in 35 years. Tuscaloosa police Capt. Mike Flowers works his final shift Friday, and he says his habit of going to work every day began when he was a child. The 59-year-old says his parents always encouraged him to get up and get going, and he never missed a day of school after the first grade. He became a policeman in 1980 and has worked without taking a day off to be sick ever since. Flowers kept coming to work after a motorcycle crash in the 1980s, and he kept working after emergency surgery in 2010. Now Flowers and his wife plan to spend more time at the beach.
