(Newser) – In what should probably be long enough to apply for permanent residence status, astronaut Scott Kelly set a US record for most days spent in space Friday, his 383rd day of living outside the Earth's atmosphere, USA Today reports. By the time he returns from his current mission, he'll have spent 522 days in space across four missions. He's also scheduled to set another US record—most consecutive days in space—Oct. 29, the 216th day of his current mission. According to NASA, Kelly's record setting isn't just for personal glory; it actually has a scientific purpose, adding to our understanding of the effects of long-term space living. Kelly tweeted he's looking forward to his records being broken when humans set out for Mars.
