Lady Mary Crawley lost her true love on Downton Abbey, and now the actress who plays her is experiencing life that has devastatingly imitated art. Michelle Dockery's Irish fiance, John Dineen, died in Cork on Sunday with Dockery at his side, People reports. The 34-year-old PR exec had been diagnosed with a rare cancer earlier this year and had traveled to Germany to receive treatment before returning home for hospice care, per the Independent.

The 34-year-old actress was relatively mum about her relationship with Dineen, whom she started dating in September 2013 after being introduced by Downton co-star Allen Leech, People notes. One of the only statements she ever made about Dineen was in September 2014, when she let slip, "I have a wonderful man in my life from Ireland." A statement from Dockery via her publicist expresses gratitude to her fans for their "support and kindness" and asks that she and Dineen's family "are left to grieve in private."
