US stocks are closing higher, with many of the biggest gains coming in technology and consumer stocks, the AP reports. Solid quarterly results from cruise line operator Carnival sent travel companies higher Tuesday. Carnival jumped 4%. Tech companies were also posting solid gains. Microsoft climbed 2%. Traders were encouraged by a survey that showed consumer confidence at a nine-year high. Energy and utility companies lagged the market. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 133 points, or 0.7%, to 18,228. The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 13 points, or 0.6%, to 2,159. The Nasdaq composite gained 48 points, or 0.9%, to 5,305.
