Stocks turned lower in the late afternoon after being higher for much of the day and ended with modest losses, the AP reports. Industrial companies and retailers fell more than the rest of the market Tuesday. Boeing gave up 2.4% and Home Depot lost 1.5%. Smaller companies slumped after setting records the last few days. Automakers rose after China said it will reduce auto import duties in July. Fiat Chrysler rose 1.3%. The S&P 500 index fell 8 points, or 0.3%, to 2,724. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 178 points, or 0.7%, to 24,834. The Nasdaq composite declined 15 points, or 0.2%, to 7,378. (More stock market stories.)
