Search for reasons behind ratings decline may center on host

(Newser) – A marketing survey into why ratings are off for this season of American Idol has some wondering if Ryan Seacrest's days as host are numbered, MSNBC reports. Many questions focused on how viewers respond to Seacrest and his interactions with judges and contestants. One source, though, says the queries “fall under the leave-no-stone-unturned category more than anything else."

(NEWSER) - After years of poor ratings, NBC may be on the rebound with the help of two new series: cop show Southland and Amy Poehler’s comedy Parks and Recreation. Parks scored only 6.9 million total viewers, but it maintained 88% of The Office’s coveted young-adult audience. Southland topped CBS’ Harper’s Island in the 18-to-49 demographic and beat expectations by almost equaling Harper’s Island's total viewership. More»

Idol Ratings Slip, but Still Strong at 30M

Smallest audience since '04 as Fox sees 10% dip

(NEWSER) - American Idol’s eighth-season opener drew 10% fewer viewers than the previous installment’s premiere, Bloomberg reports. But with 30 million viewers, it still tripled the ratings of nearest rival CBS among viewers aged 18-49. Idol, Fox’s highest-rated show, raised $750 million in ad revenue last year. The judges sized up contestants in Arizona this time, before the show’s smallest audience in 5 years. More»

Idol Producer: J.Lo Coming Back

(AP) - Though we haven't heard the words from J.Lo herself, an executive producer of American Idol says celebrity judge Jennifer Lopez will return for another season. Nigel Lythgoe made the announcement on the On-Air with Ryan Seacrest program yesterday morning. He acknowledged it wasn't official, but he added he was "delighted to say that all three judges" and the show's "brilliant host" (aka Ryan Seacrest) are back for the next season, its 11th. Oprah Finale Draws Biggest Audience Since 1994

And it's not the only TV finale drawing eyeballs this week

(NEWSER) - It's starting to look like Americans haven't moved from the couch all week. Early numbers show yesterday's finale of The Oprah Winfrey Show drew the most viewers it has had in 17 years. The final episode—which featured no guests , but rather a personal conversation between Oprah, her studio audience ... and millions watching at home—garnered a 13.3 household rating in the nation's metered markets, according to Nielsen. The last time an Oprah episode had a number that high was back in February 1994—"People Shed Their Disguises" featured Oprah confronting guests about their questionable outward appearances. More»
