Death Camps May Charge Admission

Posted May 31, 07 5:53 AM CDT in World Glossies

(Newser) – Nazi concentration camps need to start charging visitors an entrance fee, those who run them say; subsidies from the German government aren't adequate for upkeep and tour guides for millions of pilgrims who visit every year. The proposal has prompted outrage from German Jews, the London Times reports.

Auschwitz is kept solvent by an American donor, Ronald Lauder, but German camps are struggling, Dachau museum's president says, and many requests for visits and educational programs are turned down. A ticket price, he says, is the only solution. "These are graveyards," a Jewish-German spokesman responded. "You do not pay to mourn the dead."
